SAAS is a regional compurehesive agriculture research institution under the leadership of Shanghai Municipal People¡¯s Government, after a development of 46 years, now it has a staff of 1084 persons among whom 157 have or are pursuing  doctor or master degree.

SAAS has  9 research institution,  namely:
Crop, Forest and Fruit Institute,
Environment and Zoology Protection Institute,
Establishment Horticultural Institute,
Mushroom Institute,
Husbandry and Veterinarian Institute,
Agriculture Scientific and Technologic Information Institute,
Agriculture Biological Gene Center, Biological Testing Center,
Shanghai Feed Quality Supervising and Testing Station.

SAAS also has constructed a well technologic plane, which consist of the key laboratory of agricultural genetics and breeding of Shanghai, key laboratory of establishment horticultural techniques of Shanghai, Shanghai sub-center of vegetable breed improving of the Ministry of Agriculture, Shanghai sub-center  of edible fungi  product quality supervising and testing, and Shanghai sub-center of new plant testing.

Among SAAS's research fields, her researches in establishment horticultural techniques, mushroom genetics and breeding, advantage exploring of crop crossbreed, and agricultural biological techniques are at a higher level in China.
