Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute in Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1960. There are 50 employees, including 45 scientists ( 22 senior researchers , 39 Masters and Doctors). It was composed of Rice Research Center, Rape Research Center, Maize Research Center, Preservation and Processing Center for Agricultural Products and Shanghai Electron Beam Irradiation Technology Co., LTD. There are three national research platforms (Rape Industry System Test Station, Rape Original Seed Base, and Hybrid Japonica Rice Original Seed Base) and three provincial research platforms (Rice Industry Technical System, Agricultural Product Preservation and Professional Technical Service Platform, Shanghai Fresh-Eating Maize Industry Technology System).

           Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute mainly engaged in breeding and cultivation of rice, rape and maize, preservation and processing of agricultural product research, and irradiation sterilization services. More than 10 varieties of rice, rape and maize were approved by national authorities, and over 140 varieties of rice, rape and maize were approved by provincial authorities. In addition, over 50 varieties have obtained the national new variety right, and more than 40 national invention patents have been granted. For its great research achievement, Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute won 11 National Science and Technology Awards, 72 Provincial Science and Technology Achievement Awards. And it was rated as top 100 agricultural and forestry research institutions with highest competitiveness in China, and top 100 Institutes for the comprehensive assessment by Ministry of Agriculture of China.

            Recently, the Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute focus on agricultural science and technology innovation. It takes lead position in breeding of high quality hybrid japonica rice, double-low rape varieties and waxy maize. The series varieties of double-low rape have been applied to a large area in Yangtze River Delta region, the hybrid rice has become the main cultivar in suburbs of Shanghai, and the promotion area of high quality conventional rice and fresh-eating maize varieties is enlarging to optimize the planting industry structure, agricultural efficiency and farmers' income.
